Are dentures cheaper than implants?

Yes, dentures are generally much cheaper than implants, especially when considering the initial upfront cost. The costs for a full set of dentures range from 450 € to 3,600 € in Ireland, depending on the materials and complexity. The partial dentures typically cost less, starting at around 300 €. A single implant costs between 1,800 € and 3,600 € in Ireland.

These are the aspects that one should consider when it comes to the cost of dentures:

  • The cost of dentures does not cover either the cost of other treatments such as tooth extraction, or bone structure augmentation, or the costs of panoramic x-rays and of medication.
  • Each case is individual. Therefore the following dentures costs represent the average treatment process.
  • Some treatments combine different procedures. For example, one can have a treatment with standard dental implants and zircon (all-ceramics) dental crowns or a treatment with premium dental implants and removable dentures.
  • With the help of modern dental medicine, a fixed dental denture can be applied in all cases. This is significantly more convenient and simpler for the patient.

How much does health insurance cover for dentures?

In general, state health insurance does not cover planned medical treatment abroad. With dental treatment in Hungary, including travel, you can save up to 40-60% compared to UK prices, with short waiting lists and professional doctors.

There is no clear answer to how much health insurance covers for dentures in Ireland. This varies greatly depending on the specific health insurance plan and the type of dentures needed.
Health insurance plan:
Coverage Level: Different plans offer different levels of dental coverage. Some only cover routine check-ups and cleanings, while others partially cover dentures.
Annual limit: Most plans have an annual limit on how much they will pay for dental treatment. This limit can be a fixed amount (e.g. €500) or a percentage of the total cost (e.g. 50%).
Waiting Period: Some plans have waiting periods before you can claim certain treatments, including dentures. This can be between 3 and 12 months

Type of denture:
Basic dentures are usually the cheapest. Health insurance plans are more likely to cover some of the cost of basic dentures.
Partial Dentures replace some missing teeth and are usually more expensive than full dentures. Coverage for partial dentures depends on your plan.
Implant-supported dentures are the most expensive dentures, as they have to be surgically implanted into the jawbone. Health insurance plans rarely cover the full cost of implant-supported dentures, but some may offer partial coverage. To find out exactly how much your health insurance will cover for dentures, you need to do the following: Contact your insurer – check your policy documents – Talk to your dentist: They will advise you on the best dentures for your needs and prepare a cost estimate which you can then use to negotiate with your insurer.

What is the cheapest fixed denture?

The cheapest fixed dentures are:

Clasp denture

A removable denture that is attached to the existing teeth with metal clasps. Advantages: Most affordable option for fixed dentures. Disadvantages: Can be less aesthetic than other options, the clasps can be visible. Can become loose over time and may need to be readjusted. Cost: Depends on the number of teeth being replaced, but usually less expensive than other options.

Dental bridge

A fixed prosthesis that attaches to adjacent teeth to fill a gap.
Advantages: More aesthetic than a clasp denture, provides good chewing function.
Disadvantages: Adjacent teeth must be ground down to attach the bridge.
Cost: More expensive than a clasp denture, but less expensive than implants.

Standard fixed denture (fixed dental prosthesis)

Non-removable(=fixed) dentures, Dental crowns, dental bridge pillars or dental bridges are fixed on a certain number of dental implants. The number of dental implants depends on the number of teeth that need replacement. The size of the jaw (so the optimal chewing force distribution and stability) also determines the number of dental implants.
The following example contains an average number of implants in the case of the rehabilitation of a whole jaw. Whether the teeth replacement will be a dental denture, crowns or bridges depends on the number of teeth to be replaced and on the preferences of the patient.

The following example of denture cost contains standard dental implants (e.g. from the manufacturer SGS) and metallic-ceramic dental crowns.

All-on-4 treatment concept

All-On-4 dental implants are designed to replace an entire arch of teeth with only four dental implants. Due to the surgical technique used, no bone graft is required. This is because the two posterior implants are placed 45 degrees in the jawbone to make the most of the bone supply. For the healing period, the patient receives a temporary denture. After the healing period, the final, screw-retained round bride, which sits stably on the four implants, is manufactured. This is then fixed onto the already exposed, with implant abutments fitted implants. The final replacement is very similar to natural teeth, both aesthetically and functionally.
